The Former Lowry Training Annex (FLTA) is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Denver in Arapahoe County , Colorado. The FLTA site encompasses approximately 565 acres directly north of the Former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range (FLBGR) in Townships 4 and 5 South, Range 65 West, in Sections 1, 2, 35, and 36.
As part of the adjacent FLBGR, much of the area which later became the Lowry Training Annex was used to train troops during World War II in field fortifications and infantry combat. In 1969, the FLTA site was reclaimed from the Navy East Blast Research Range, and an expanded mission for the Integrated Weapons Training Facility was sited on the western portion of the property. This was the origin of the FLTA Air Force Site.
From 1981 through 1994, the FLTA site was approved for use as a Munitions Demonstration Range. The FLTA was used as a combination training proficiency range and disposal range. The primary purpose was to demonstrate the potential effects of munitions in a controlled environment. Operations at the FLTA ceased in March 1994.
